WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) demanded answers from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on the issue of violent individuals being released into the country, leading to tragic consequences. Dr. Paul highlighted a specific case, saying, "There’s currently no effective method to thoroughly vet these individuals, especially those from Venezuela, for potential violent criminal backgrounds before granting them entry into the country." He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "This oversight is not just a lapse; it is a direct disregard for the safety and security of the American people."

Dr. Paul expressed sympathy for the families affected by violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants, bringing attention to the tragic death of Laken Hope Riley, a nursing student killed by Jose Antonio Ibarra. Dr. Paul and his committee colleagues had previously requested information on Ibarra, who was released into the country through parole and went on to commit several violent crimes. Dr. Paul pressed Secretary Mayorkas on the concerning reports indicating that Ibarra was released on parole solely due to a detention center being at maximum capacity, calling it a "flagrant misuse of authority."

During the hearing, Dr. Paul pointed out that DHS already has the power to effectively secure the border without the need for new legislation. He criticized the Biden administration for overturning previous executive orders, including the Remain in Mexico policy, which he believes has contributed to the current situation at the southern border. Dr. Paul urged Secretary Mayorkas to enforce existing laws and prevent dangerous individuals from entering the country.

In conclusion, Dr. Paul's stance is clear: the safety and security of the American people must be the top priority in addressing the crisis at the southern border.
